Generosity is a wonderful thing isn’t it, especially when it is ‘no strings attached’ generosity!? Have you ever been part of that? You and I live at a time in world history when global events are reported to the world within seconds, often stirring up a radical generosity response from people who’ve never been to that disaster location nor do they know anyone there. But also with modern transportation and communication, often the practical help needed, in a major disaster, can be on location in a very short period of time, saving lives!
But centuries ago news traveled much more slowly and disaster response often did not arrive until vast numbers of people had died. The apostle Paul was writing his first letter to the Corinthian Christians at a time like that, the mid first century. As Paul drew this letter to a close he wrote something fascinating: “Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem.” (1 Cor. 16:1-3)
